Marmara Hemp is the first hemp fiber to be certified as sustainable, Cradle to Cradle (Platinum level) and with a Life Cycle Assessment performed by a certified body.
Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated textile fibers. Its cultivation in Europe goes back more than 8,000 years. Europe produces more than 35,000 hectars of this precious fiber, making it one of the most important production areas in the world.
The famous "de Nîmes" trousers, which will give its name to denim jeans, were originally made from hemp before being made from cotton. Levis Strauss' first "jeans" were made of hemp fibers. In 1850 about 75% of the world's textiles were made from hemp, the strongest fiber!
The numerous properties of hemp fiber make it a noble and healthy material. Contrary to cotton, hemp does not need irrigation or chemical inputs to stimulate its growth or to protect it, this resource can potentially transform the industry's impact on the planet.
Marmara Hemp is just a simple return to the textile roots.

We team up with the farmers during the retting process to ensure the straws get the right level of retting to deliver the best fineness possible for spinning.
During the industrial process, we blend several lots together to ensure a consistent quality and color month after month.

Scouring of hemp fibers is done strictly based on REACH regulations. Scouring is done on the fibers to obtain the highest level of fineness. Scoured fibers should be kept to spin finer counts and/or a high hemp ratio in the blend.
The sustainability certificate that was granted to Marmara Original is the result of a two-steps certification. The first certification regards the cultivation methods used and the initial processing. Then there is a certification of the fibre mechanical refining process.
The certificate offers private labels the guarantee that the hemp fibre used is sustainable. The brands can claim it on their garments and gain a strong commercial bonus.
The LCA was conducted on Marmara Original®. It covers the full cycle from seeds to shipping at the port of departure. This includes the complete farming, decorticating and cottonizing processes.
Compilation and assessment of the potential environmental inputs, outputs and impacts of a product system over its life cycle (ISO14040).
